Group Counseling
A way to try counseling if you have never participated in therapy before is to join a group with several people at the same time. Group counseling is a great way to receive additional support or feedback from people who have similar concerns and goals as you. Group therapy can be used alone, but it is oftentimes integrated into a treatment plan that also includes individual therapy.
Here are some things to know about Group Counseling…
You are not alone in your struggle…
When you are a member of a group, you not only have the opportunity to listen carefully to others and increase your understanding of your shared concerns, but you realize that you are not alone in your struggles. Group therapy provides a safe space to share your difficulties while learning how to try new ways of communicating with others. It is also helpful to hear how other group members handled similar situations in a healthy way so that you can make positive changes as well.
Group counseling is confidential…
Group counseling includes developing a set of shared guidelines that assist in meeting the needs of their specific group, and this includes a confidentiality rule. As such, members of the group agree not to identify other members or their concerns outside of the group, so that the member and content of the group sessions are confidential.
I develop new groups based on the needs of new and current clients…
If you have an interest in a particular group such as for concerns like, anxiety, grief, partners of addicts, boundaries, or codependency, etc., I am always creating new groups to fit the needs of my new and existing clients. Group therapy with a specialized focus on a particular issue means you can gain tools and strategies unique to your needs and concerns.
What you can expect…
You and I will do an initial intake call to be sure the group will meet your needs. Once we determine you are a good fit for the group, I will go over any questions you may have regarding the group. Most groups I have conducted have been 8-10 weeks in duration. There is a psychoeducational and processing component to each group meeting. What this means is that I will be providing valuable information to you as well as allowing time for sharing of thoughts and feelings concerning the topic for that week. Most groups are “closed groups” which means once a group starts no additional members will join the group. We spend the first week getting to know one another as well as discussing guidelines for the group so that safety and confidentiality can be achieved.
