EMDR Therapy

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a therapy treatment used to desensitize and reprocess memories that have been stored as a result of traumatic experiences. It’s a highly unique, effective and evidence-based therapy that trained and licensed EMDR therapists utilize in a safe and comfortable office environment. It does not rely on talk therapy or medications. Instead, EMDR uses a client’s own rapid, rhythmic eye movements. These eye movements dampen the power of emotionally charged memories of past traumatic events.

Here are some things to know about EMDR Therapy…

How EMDR works and why it is helpful…

Traumatic memories begin to resolve when they are activated in a way that is different from normal memory recall. The bilateral stimulation used in EMDR helps the brain make a shift in order to reprocess these traumatic memories in a healthy way. The brain actually creates new and adaptive connections so that the client can move beyond the trauma. People who are dealing with traumatic memories and those who have Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder are thought to benefit the most from EMDR therapy. Oftentimes, EMDR therapy can provide positive results in a much shorter time period than traditional talk therapy.

EMDR is helpful even if you have not had a major trauma…

Even though you may have not had a major trauma in your life or don’t have PTSD, most of us have had events in our lives that are upsetting enough to impact the way we react to or experience things. EMDR can help process unpleasant or painful events in our lives in a way that provides lasting relief.

EMDR is useful for…

People who are dealing with traumatic memories and those who have Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder are thought to benefit the most from EMDR therapy. Nevertheless, EMDR therapy is also being used to treat depression; anxiety; panic attacks; phobias; addictions; OCD; and performance issues.
